After its reboot in the Fall of 1960, Naked City began getting noticed, at least in the pages of TV Guide, in the spring of 1961 as
regular reviewer Gilbert Seldes gave an ambivalent critique of the
ground-breaking police drama in the April 8 cover issue. Seldes' assessment was
that the show had segments of brilliance mixed with portions that didn't make
sense, making each episode somewhat disjointed, but his real criticism was that
he didn't buy in to the series' main premise of exploring the psychology of the
criminal mind and what drives someone to kill. In particular he calls out the
early 1961 episode "A Hole in the City" (February 1, 1961), which
casts Robert Duvall as ruthless psychopath Lewis Nunda who leads a gang to hold
up an armored car and in the ensuing chase with the police is forced to hole up
in the apartment of his Aunt Florence. As the episode unfolds, we learn that
Aunt Florence was Lewis' inspiration to pursue a life of crime because his
father indoctrinated him to put her on a pedestal of wealth and gentility after
she married a successful businessman. When her husband died, she was left
destitute and had to move from her stately manor into her present squalid flat,
also having to give up her piano, which Lewis' father maintained was a sign of
refinement. A young, naive Lewis tried to buy her a new one with only $28
stolen from money his parents had set aside to buy his sister a new dress, only
to learn that a piano costs much more than that. So now that he has made off
with $65,000 from an armored car, he wants to give her his share to finally
restore the symbol of her refinement, only she wants no part of it. She goes on
to shatter his illusion by telling him that her husband was cruel and miserly
and that his father's ideal of wealth and having it made was an illusion
because her married life was miserable. Though reviewer Seldes feigns not to
understand what drives Nunda to murder as he brutally shoots an old man
residing in the same apartment building and tosses him down a staircase as a sign
to the police not to come any farther, the episode makes very clear Lewis has
an unwavering drive to restore his exalted aunt to her rightful position at the
top of society. When he learns that his father's ideal was a sham, rather than
retaliating, he deliberately makes a dash out onto the roof of the apartment
building, knowing he will be gunned down, and even yells at the police to hurry
up and finish him because the world is nothing, at least his world is. This episode
shows why Naked City was different
from every other police drama of its time and why it is still held in high
regard today. Rather than the rote police procedurals of series such as M Squad which shows the police as tough
defenders of justice and the criminals as just plain rotten reprobates, Naked City sought to explain, not defend
or exonerate, the twisted logic behind the criminal's thought process. This
attempt at understanding no doubt threatened those who conflate understanding
with approval, but it is clear in this episode that Lewis Nunda is only to be
pitied for being so mixed up, not blameless.
Seldes also claims to be confused about protagonist Nicholas
Ross in "Murder Is a Face I Know" (January 11, 1961), remarking
"you never know why a well-established family man gets into a boat and
kills five men." Actually, the episode makes very clear that Ross is a
professional assassin and has been for many years, a trade that he keeps hidden
from his high school basketball-playing son, but his wife, who was promised
long ago by her husband that he was leaving his life of crime, is not surprised
when thugs show up later and ransack her apartment looking for him. The
episode's primary purpose is to show that people are not one dimensional--that
a hardened assassin can also be a loving father and devoted family man. This
refusal to adhere to traditional black-and-white depictions of crime and
humanity challenged long-held beliefs by conservatives such as Seldes but also
proved exciting to viewers who agreed that such traditional conceptions were
too simplistic.
Which is not to say that Naked
City doesn't also occasionally portray a criminal who is inexplicably bad,
such as murderous private security guard Al Buxley in "The Day the Island
Almost Sank" (June 14, 1961), but more often the criminals are driven to
their acts out of desperation rather than pure greed or the sadistic pleasure
of doing harm. In one of the series' most admired episodes "Ooftus
Goofus" (December 13, 1961) perpetually ignored grocery clerk George Bick
resorts to an escalating series of pranks accompanied by letters to the editor
signed "Ooftus Goofus" because his wife won't give him the time of
day and is spending them into poverty. In "Take and Put" (June 21,
1961) family maid Irma Mahoney and her employer, trust-fund-squanderer Aubrey
Hacker, develop an elaborate scheme to maintain their lavish lifestyle by temporarily
stealing a fine piece of jewelry from one of their party guests, hocking it
with a local jeweler, investing the advance money in the stock market, and
after making a tidy return, getting the jewelry out of hock and having it
anonymously returned to its rightful owner. And in "The Day It Rained
Mink" (February 15, 1961) second-rate mink seller William Saxer teams up
with coat-lining salesman Maxwell Ronan and his mistress, fur coat model
Estelle Reeves, to heist a million dollars worth of mink coats from upscale designer
Warfield so that Saxer can finally finance his own shop and Estelle can finally
leave the world of modeling where she is ogled and propositioned by sleazy
buyers. Bick comes off as the most sympathetic of the above-mentioned characters,
the others not so much, but all of their actions are a response to pain of one
sort or another.
As mentioned in our post for the 1960 episodes of Naked City, the series provides little
to no back story for its trio of police heroes Lt. Mike Parker, Det. Adam
Flint, and Det. Frank Arcaro, but in the 1961 episodes we occasionally get a
glimpse of the pain they experience in performing their duties. Flint gets the
worst of it in "Bullets Cost Too Much" (January 4, 1961), when he visits
a neighborhood bar to try to persuade its owner to stop staying open so late and
a trio of masked robbers enter, put a gun to the bartender's neck, and empty
the cash register. But while they are doing so, a dog belonging to one of the
bar regulars approaches one of the thieves and attacks him, so he kicks the dog
in response. The bar patron, inebriated as he usually is, does not recognize
the danger of the situation and confronts the thief, who shoots him dead. Flint
watches the murder unfold and thinks about drawing his gun, having the
advantage of surprise since he is a plain-clothes detective not known to the
thieves, but knows that if he does the bartender at least will be killed and
possibly other customers, so he keeps his weapon holstered and later has to
endure an onslaught of criticism for being "cowardly." He comes in
for particularly brutal treatment from the drunk man's widow, a mean alcoholic
herself, when he tries to explain to her why he didn't draw his gun to try to
save her husband. Flint again experiences tremendous guilt and anguish in
"The Fault in Our Stars" (March 22, 1961) when he has a police woman
go undercover as an aspiring actor to try to collect evidence from another
actor suspected for a string of murders, only to have the suspect figure out
that she is a plant and murder her, too. Parker and Arcaro experience remorse
when they compromise key evidence in "Tombstone for a Derelict"
(April 5, 1961) because their mistake allows a gang of swastika-wearing
misguided youths to continue their killing spree against defenseless derelicts.
The police detectives on Naked City
are not infallible superheroes who always get their man--they make mistakes
just like the rest of us.
One of the most poignant and probing episodes of the series
is the Season 3 offering "Which Is Joseph Creeley?" (November 15,
1961) which depicts the retrial of a man convicted for the slaying of a jeweler
and the crippling of his wife. After his capture by Flint and his conviction,
Creeley passes out in his jail cell and when he is examined by a medical
professional is discovered to have a tumor pressing on his brain. The ensuing
operation to remove the tumor also removes Creeley's memory for the past 10
years, including the murder for which he has been incarcerated. The post-operative
Creeley has become a docile man who recoils at the crime he is told that he has
committed and agrees that if he actually committed it he should suffer the
consequences. But his defense attorney argues that the post-operative Creeley
is a different person and that his murderous actions before surgery were the
result of the tumor pressing against his brain, making him not guilty by reason
of insanity. Flint agrees with the defense attorney's argument and testifies on
Creeley's behalf. During one of the breaks in the trial, Flint and his fiance
Libby have a serious discussion about what constitutes guilt and the necessity
of rendering a verdict, despite one's ambivalence in cases such as this one, to
preserve the system of justice that holds society together. The episode is
remarkable because it ends without the viewer ever learning the jury's verdict
in Creeley's retrial but perhaps even more so because it depicted a killer
afflicted by a brain malady a full 5 years before Charles Whitman's murderous
rampage from the University of Texas Tower--yet another example of why Naked City was a crime drama ahead of
its time.
The Actors
For the biographies of Paul Burke, Horace McMahon, Harry
Bellaver, and Nancy Malone, see the 1960 post for Naked City.
William Cottrell
Born June 6, 1918 in Medford, Oregon, Cottrell was raised in
the Rogue River area of Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon,
after which he stayed in the area for 6 years acting in and directing the
Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He later relocated to Hollywood and became an
acting student of Charles Laughton. According to fellow actor and Laughton
student William Phipps, Cottrell managed to pass himself off to younger, more
naive aspiring actors as an acting guru and ran his own workshop. But one day
in 1947 when Cottrell and Phipps were both acting in Laughton's production of
Bertold Brecht's Galileo, Laughton
dropped in on Cottrell's acting studio and basically took it over. Phipps
speculates that Laughton may have felt some guilt over this, as he was
instrumental in launching Cottrell's film career even though he didn't think
much of his skill as an actor. Ironically, Cottrell's first feature film
appearance was an uncredited part in the 1948 version of The Naked City. His first credited role was in Laughton's 1949
feature The Man on the Eiffel Tower,
and he appeared two years later in another Laughton feature The Strange Door. Besides appearing in
the 1947 TV movie Pastoral, his first
real TV role was in a 1952 episode of the drama anthology Schlitz Playhouse, though he had scarcely one TV appearance per
year before Naked City. He did,
however, find bit parts in such notable feature films as Titanic, Julius Caesar,
and Donovan's Brain. His only
recurring television role was as the 65th Precinct lab technician, often
(though not always) named Freddie.
After Naked City he
had only one appearance on The Defenders
in 1963 and two TV movies in 1963 and 1983. At some point he returned to
Medford because he died there June 14, 2001 at the age of 83.
Robert Dryden
Born in New York City on February 8, 1917, Dryden had a
prolific and lengthy career as a voice actor in radio, beginning as early as
1938. He made his Broadway debut that same year in The Hill Between. Though he played a variety of supporting roles,
often playing multiple characters in a single episode, he also had a few
recurring radio roles such as cabbie Harry the Hack on Big Town in the 1940s and police St. Maggio on Call the Police. He found regular work on anthology series such as Gangbusters, I Love a
Mystery, and Studio One as well
as bit parts on big-name series such as Superman,
The Shadow, and The Mysterious Traveler. He first broke into TV in 1955 in
supporting roles on Tom Corbett, Space
Cadet, I Spy, and Producers' Showcase. His first feature
film role came in 1957 playing a mobster in Four
Boys and a Gun. Even though television was supplanting radio by the late
1950s, Dryden continued to find more work in the latter, regularly appearing on
series such as CBS Radio Workshop, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, and The Couple Next Door. He also had a
brief recurring role on 17 episodes of The
Edge of Night in 1957-58. After two generic appearances on the first
iteration of Naked City in 1959,
Dryden appeared 12 more times as the unnamed police surgeon in the rebooted
series between 1960-62.
After Naked City, Dryden
continued to work mostly in radio on revival series such as Theatre Five, The National Lampoon Radio Hour, and The CBS Radio Mystery Theater. He found occasional television work
on shows such as Route 66, The Defenders, and made 10 appearances
on Jackie Gleason's late 1960s reboot of The
Honeymooners. Dryden also found voicework on commercials for Life Savers
and in dubbing English voices for Sergio Leone westerns such as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. By the
mid-1970s his feature film work centered on wacky comedies such as Man on a Swing, Foreplay, and The Happy
Hooker. He died from Parkinson's disease in Englewood, New Jersey on
December 16, 2003 at the age of 86.
